Community events

  • 2025 Puerto Rican Day Parade: The annual parade is scheduled for Sunday, September 28, 2025. It will feature music, dancing, and floats on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
  • Hispanic Fiesta: Concilio’s Annual Hispanic Fiesta was held in late June 2025 at LOVE Park in partnership with Wawa Welcome America. The event featured music, food, and cultural performances.

Social and political issues

  • Health and economic inequity: A Pew Charitable Trusts fact sheet from September 2025 noted a declining poverty rate for Latinos in Philadelphia, but also highlighted that many still live below the federal poverty level. A January 2025 Kensington Voice report detailed ongoing health service inequities and high rates of chronic conditions among Puerto Ricans in North Philadelphia.
  • Outrage over political comments: After offensive remarks were made about Puerto Rico during a political rally in New York in October 2024, members of Philadelphia’s Puerto Rican community, including City Council members, expressed outrage and called for a political response.
  • ICE enforcement concerns: In January 2025, the owners of a Puerto Rican restaurant in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia reported that ICE agents showed up without a warrant. One of the owners, a retired Philadelphia police officer, used social media to share the experience and educate others on their rights.
